PHP Foundation Executive Director Says Insufficient Funds, Only One Full-Time Employee
The Executive Director of the PHP Foundation, Elizabeth Barron, stated that the foundation is severely underfunded, currently employing only one full-time staff member and 14 part-time contractors. Funding primarily comes from donations and grants. Barron pointed out the stark contrast between the heavy reliance of businesses and governments on PHP and the foundation's lack of funds. The increase in coding related to artificial intelligence has roughly doubled the foundation's workload, yet the number of contributors has not increased correspondingly, despite the number of code change proposals being nearly double that of last year. Reviewing code contributions and vulnerability reports requires significant manpower and expertise. Two recently discovered critical vulnerabilities prompted urgent patches across global websites, highlighting the importance of PHP to the internet. PHP is estimated to support about 70% of websites worldwide, and there is currently no evidence that these vulnerabilities were exploited prior to disclosure.
