Vitalik Buterin warned on November 4, 2026, that the cryptocurrency industry must change its priorities following the recent hack of Binance, which had an estimated impact of $6.3 billion. In an interview during Devcon 8 in Mumbai, Buterin emphasized that the next two years should focus on protecting operations and customer funds, rather than competing for market share. He described this strategy as a 'bunker mode.' Buterin highlighted that recent attacks have targeted more centralized interfaces and systems than smart contracts, suggesting that multi-signature wallets can reduce custody risks. He also mentioned that the continuation of these incidents could lead to stricter regulatory intervention. The attack on Binance, attributed to North Korean actors, became one of the largest thefts in the industry. The platform assured that it would cover customer losses and reported the recovery of nearly $2.85 billion in assets. Buterin recommended that companies and users adopt multi-signature systems for greater security and reduce reliance on intermediaries.
